Lyme arthritis, a manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi infection, is underrecognized in Germany. This study highlights a higher rate of chronic joint involvement and erosive arthritis in South German patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Lyme arthritis is a known manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi infection.
    • Previous reports may not fully represent the spectrum of Lyme disease in Germany due to patient selection bias.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of Lyme arthritis in South Germany.
    • To assess the diagnostic methods and clinical outcomes of Lyme arthritis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 20 confirmed Lyme arthritis cases from South Germany.
    • Diagnosis confirmed by indirect immunofluorescence and IgG Western blot for Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies.
    • Radiographic evaluation for joint involvement.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Lyme arthritis was observed as a significant manifestation of Borrelia burgdorferi infection.
    • In 11 patients, arthritis was the sole clinical sign of infection.
    • A notable proportion (4/20) developed erosive arthritis, indicating chronic joint involvement.

    Conclusions:

    • Lyme arthritis is likely underdiagnosed in Germany.
    • The findings suggest a higher incidence of chronic and erosive Lyme arthritis than previously reported.
    • Patient selection in prior studies may have skewed the perceived frequency of disease manifestations.
