    Summary

    Low-dose oral psoralen photochemotherapy (PUVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) therapy significantly reduced rash and itch in polymorphic light eruption (PLE) patients. These treatments offered protection against increasing ultraviolet radiation exposure compared to controls.

    Background:

    • Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is a common photodermatosis characterized by inflammatory skin reactions upon sun exposure.
    • Current management often involves sun avoidance and symptomatic treatment, with limited options for effective prophylaxis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of low-dose prophylactic oral psoralen photochemotherapy (PUVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiation in preventing or reducing symptoms of polymorphic light eruption (PLE).

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, controlled trial involving 42 PLE patients randomly assigned to three groups: PUVA with 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP), UVB with placebo, and UVA control with placebo.
    • Therapy was administered three times weekly for 6 weeks, with escalating doses based on minimal phototoxic/erythema dose.
