    Summary

    In Bio Breeding/Worcester (BB/W) rats, lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (ATA) levels increase with age, independent of diabetes. Glucose metabolism derangements may affect thyroid hormones.

    Background:

    • Spontaneous lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) and diabetes mellitus occur in Bio Breeding/Worcester (BB/W) rats.
    • Investigating the relationship between LT, diabetes, and related biomarkers is crucial for understanding autoimmune diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine serial changes in plasma anti-thyroglobulin antibody (ATA), thyroid hormones, and blood glucose in BB/W rats.
    • To correlate these levels with histological findings in the thyroid gland.
    • To assess the BB/W rat as a model for human autoimmune conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Solid-phase enzyme immunoassay was used to measure plasma ATA levels.
    • Thyroid hormones (free 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine [FT3] and total thyroxine [TT4]) and blood glucose were measured.
