This study developed the Hedonic Overeating-Questionnaire (HEDO-Q) to assess hedonic overeating and loss of control over eating. The HEDO-Q shows good psychometric properties for trait assessment in the general population.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Addictive-like eating is common, but lacks clear conceptualization outside addiction frameworks.
- A biopsychological approach to food reward is needed for understanding eating behaviors.
- Trait assessment of hedonic overeating and dyscontrol requires validated instruments.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate a brief self-report questionnaire for assessing hedonic overeating and dyscontrol.
- To operationalize addictive-like eating within a food reward framework.
- To provide a psychometrically sound measure for population studies.
Main Methods:
- Rational item construction for the Hedonic Overeating-Questionnaire (HEDO-Q).
- Psychometric evaluation in a large, random German population sample (N=2531).
- Confirmatory factor analysis, reliability, and validity assessments.
Main Results:
- The six-item HEDO-Q demonstrated a unidimensional structure with wanting, liking, and dyscontrol components.
- Favorable psychometric properties including high internal consistency and good item-total correlations.
- Measurement invariance across sex, age, and weight status; discriminant, convergent, and divergent validity established.
Conclusions:
- The HEDO-Q is a psychometrically sound, brief self-report measure for assessing hedonic overeating and dyscontrol in the general population.
- The questionnaire shows good validity in distinguishing individuals with and without eating disturbances or obesity.
- Further validation studies on stability, sensitivity to change, and predictive validity are recommended.
