A new 2D Long Film feature on the O-arm Surgical Imaging System improves thoracic level localization for obese patients, potentially reducing wrong-level spinal surgery (WLSS) risk.

  • Wrong-level spinal surgery (WLSS) is a significant concern, often stemming from intraoperative localization errors.
  • Standard fluoroscopy can be challenging for obese patients due to image scatter and limited field of view, increasing WLSS risk.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated a new "2D Long Film" feature on the Medtronic O-arm Surgical Imaging System.
  • Two obese female patients undergoing thoracic fusion were imaged using both standard fluoroscopy and the 2D Long Film feature.

Findings:

  • The 2D Long Film successfully captured vertebral levels, instrumentation, and localization needles in a single, clear image for obese patients.
  • This feature appears to mitigate issues of image scatter and restricted field of view inherent in standard fluoroscopy for this patient population.
