Cognitive Dissonance01:38

Cognitive Dissonance

33.9K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

126
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Robbers Cave

14.4K
During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension...

Bootstrapping01:24

Bootstrapping

673
The term "bootstrap" originated in the 19th century as a metaphor for self-improvement or achieving something independently, without external assistance. This concept extends to statistical bootstrapping, a self-contained method for estimating population parameters through resampling, even though it can be computationally intensive. Developed by the American statistician Dr. Bradley Efron in 1979, bootstrapping provides a robust way to perform inference when the original sample size is...

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

98
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Summary

Participation in medical school boot camps, pediatric subinternships, or electives did not significantly improve intern performance. However, extensive pediatric boot camp experience showed minor benefits in feedback incorporation and help-seeking for new interns.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education Research
  • Pediatric Residency Training
  • Internship Performance Evaluation

Background:

  • Medical school boot camps and pediatric electives are common experiences for aspiring pediatricians.
  • The impact of these preparatory experiences on early intern performance is not well-established.
  • Assessing the association between pre-internship training and performance is crucial for curriculum development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if pediatric boot camp participation in medical school correlates with improved intern performance.
  • To investigate associations between general boot camps, pediatric subinternships, electives, and intern performance.
  • To identify specific preparatory experiences that may enhance early residency success.

Main Methods:

  • Surveys collected data from pediatric residents on their participation in various pre-internship programs.
  • Faculty performance assessments utilized Milestone-based subcompetencies rated on a 5-point scale.
  • Data from 198 interns with complete assessments were analyzed to compare performance between groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant associations were found between participation in pediatric boot camps (≥5 days), general boot camps, subinternships, or electives and overall intern performance.
  • Interns completing at least 10 days of pediatric boot camp showed slightly higher ratings in feedback incorporation and help-seeking behavior during the initial months (June-July).

Conclusions:

  • Pre-internship experiences like boot camps and electives do not appear to substantially enhance intern performance in core competencies.
  • Pediatric educators should critically review boot camp content and expected outcomes.
  • Further research may be needed to refine curricula for optimal intern preparedness.
