Ostomy Care01:24

Ostomy Care

883
Introduction
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations.
There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies:

Adhesion01:14

Adhesion

41.8K
Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules.
Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow...

Phases of Wound Repair01:28

Phases of Wound Repair

6.5K
Following injury, the integrity of the injured tissues must be reestablished. For example, in skin tissue, wound repair involves coordination among resident skin cells, blood mononuclear cells, extracellular matrix, growth factors, and cytokines to complete the healing cascade.
Formation of Blood Clot
In case of deep injuries, trauma to blood vessels results in blood loss. In the meantime, phospholipids released from the ruptured endothelial cellular membrane are converted into arachidonic...

Area of Science:

  • Wound care and medical device technology.

Background:

  • Wound dressing adherence is a critical yet under-reviewed aspect of wound management.
  • Poor adherence leads to significant clinical and economic burdens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive review of wound dressing adherence.
  • To discuss mechanisms, consequences, influencing factors, assessment methods, and reduction strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review focusing on wound dressing adherence.
  • Analysis of factors affecting adherence (dressing, patient, wound, procedure).
  • Evaluation of in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trial assessment methods.

Main Results:

  • Identified key factors influencing dressing adherence across multiple domains.
  • Detailed the clinical and economic consequences of poor adherence.
  • Outlined various methods for assessing and improving dressing adherence.

Conclusions:

  • Highlights the importance of understanding dressing adherence for effective wound management.
  • Provides a foundation for developing improved wound dressings and patient care strategies.
  • Emphasizes the need for increased awareness and research in this area.
