Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Teratogenic effects include stillbirth, miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, and neurocognitive delay. Summary

Recurrent immature teratoma in girls can present as large abdominopelvic masses, even after chemotherapy. Complete surgical resection revealed only mature teratoma in these cases.

Background:

Immature teratomas are germ cell tumors requiring complete surgical staging.
Recurrence can occur following incomplete resection.

Observation:

Two pediatric patients experienced recurrent immature teratoma post-incomplete staging.
Large abdominopelvic masses persisted despite chemotherapy, with decreased tumor markers.

Findings:

Complete surgical resection of recurrent masses was performed.
Histopathology confirmed mature teratoma in both cases, indicating potential teratoma maturation post-treatment.

Implications:

Highlights the importance of complete surgical staging for immature teratomas.
Suggests that residual immature teratoma may mature to a benign state after treatment.
Informs management strategies for recurrent pediatric germ cell tumors.
