    Summary

    Polyploid human embryos, identified by more than two pronuclei after in-vitro fertilization, rarely result in viable offspring. Embryo survival may depend on the presence of normal diploid cells within mosaic structures.

    Background:

    • In vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures can result in abnormal fertilization events.
    • Polyploidy in human oocytes is a known cause of early embryonic arrest.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the frequency and developmental potential of polyploid human embryos resulting from IVF.
    • To explore the role of chromosomal mosaicism in the viability of polyploid embryos.

    Main Methods:

    • Cytogenetic analysis of 436 human oocytes post-in vitro fertilization.
    • Identification of oocytes with more than two pronuclei as indicators of polyploidy.
    • Assessment of chromosomal content in resulting embryos.

    Main Results:

    • A frequency of 4.8% tripronucleate ova was observed among 667 fertilized oocytes.
    • Tripronucleate oocytes were identified as precursors to polyploid embryos.
    • Some polyploid embryos exhibited chromosomal mosaicism, with co-existing polyploid and diploid cells.

    Conclusions:

    • Tripronucleate human eggs, while capable of development, do not lead to viable newborns.
    • The survival rate of polyploid embryos is hypothesized to be contingent on the proportion of normal diploid cells present.
