    Summary

This study found no significant difference in IVF success rates between smokers and non-smokers. However, smokers showed higher thiocyanate (SCN) levels in serum and follicular fluid, indicating increased cigarette consumption.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive medicine
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Smoking is a known risk factor for adverse health outcomes.
    • Thiocyanate (SCN) is a biomarker for cigarette smoke exposure.
    • The impact of smoking on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between smoking habits, SCN levels, and IVF outcomes.
    • To compare IVF fertilization and pregnancy rates between smokers and non-smokers.

    Main Methods:

    • 114 patients undergoing IVF were surveyed about smoking habits.
    • Serum and follicular fluid SCN concentrations were measured.
    • IVF outcomes (fertilization and pregnancy rates) were compared between smokers and non-smokers.

    Main Results:

    • Smokers exhibited significantly higher SCN concentrations in both serum and follicular fluid (P < 0.05).
    • No significant differences in fertilization rates were observed between smokers and non-smokers.
    • No significant differences in pregnancy rates were observed between smokers and non-smokers.

    Conclusions:

    • While smoking increases SCN levels, its direct impact on IVF success rates may be masked by other contributing factors.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex interplay of factors affecting IVF outcomes in smokers.
