Chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) can infiltrate the prostate. Six of 46 men with CLL required surgery for prostate issues, revealing leukaemic cell infiltration in all cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Hematology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) is a hematologic malignancy.
    • Prostatic outlet obstruction is a common condition in older men.

    Observation:

    • A study observed 46 men with CLL for up to seven years.
    • Six patients with CLL underwent surgery for prostatic outlet obstruction.

    Findings:

    • Histological examination of prostatic tissue revealed infiltration by small, mature lymphocytes in all six surgical patients.
    • These findings suggest a leukaemic origin of the infiltrating cells.

    Implications:

    • The incidence of prostatic leukaemic infiltration in CLL patients undergoing prostatectomy may be higher than previously recognized.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • This highlights the importance of considering leukaemic involvement in the prostate for CLL patients presenting with obstructive symptoms.
