Medial impingement lesions of the tibial plafond
Abstract:
This paper presents a newly recognized post-traumatic lesion of the ankle resulting from the impingement of the medial aspect of the talar dome against the adjacent area of the tibial plafond secondary to dorsiflexory and plantarflexory inversion injuries. Subsequently, a transchondral fracture is produced, resulting in a medial impingement lesion. This lesion is usually associated with ankle trauma, such as lateral ankle sprains, ruptures of the fibular collateral ligaments, and transchondral fractures of the talar dome. It may also be associated with a fracture, but may be present as a specific pathologic entity causing chronic ankle pain. This presentation reviews the etiology, incidence, and prognosis of such lesions.
