Anionic polymerization of 4-methacryloyloxy-TEMPO was achieved using a controlled initiator, yielding a radical polymer with high precision. This method successfully suppressed side reactions, resulting in polymers with excellent molecular weight control and high radical content.
Area of Science:
- Polymer Chemistry
- Organic Synthesis
Background:
- Controlled radical polymerization is crucial for synthesizing advanced polymer materials.
- Nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) offers control but can face challenges with specific monomers and initiators.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a controlled anionic polymerization method for 4-methacryloyloxy-TEMPO.
- To achieve high yields and precise control over polymer molecular weight and radical content.
Main Methods:
- Anionic polymerization initiated by methyl methacrylate-capped 1,1-diphenylhexyllithium (DPHLi/MMA).
- Utilizing a moderately nucleophilic initiator to prevent side reactions with the TEMPO moiety's nitroxide radical.
Main Results:
- Successful anionic polymerization of 4-methacryloyloxy-TEMPO.
- Achieved well-controlled molecular weight and a narrow polydispersity index (PDI < 1.10).
- Obtained high yields (>95%) and nearly one radical per monomer unit.
Conclusions:
- The DPHLi/MMA initiator system is effective for controlled anionic polymerization of TEMPO-containing monomers.
- This method provides a viable route to synthesize well-defined radical polymers with high functional group fidelity.
