    Summary

Ulnar subluxation of the extensor digitorum communis can impair hand function. A tendon centralizing procedure effectively treated posttraumatic subluxation, restoring full range of motion without recurrence.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic surgery
    • Hand surgery
    • Reconstructive surgery

    Background:

    • Ulnar subluxation of the extensor digitorum communis over the metacarpal head can compromise digital extensor mechanism function.
    • Causes include posttraumatic, developmental, congenital factors, or metacarpophalangeal joint arthritis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a tendon centralizing procedure for posttraumatic ulnar subluxation of the extensor digitorum communis at the metacarpophalangeal joint.

    Main Methods:

    • A tendon centralizing procedure was performed on five digits in three patients.
    • This was indicated for cases of posttraumatic ulnar subluxation where conservative management had failed.

    Main Results:

    • No recurrences of ulnar subluxation were observed in the treated digits.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • All patients achieved a full range of motion in the affected digits post-procedure.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tendon centralizing surgery is a successful treatment for posttraumatic ulnar subluxation of the extensor digitorum communis.
    • The procedure restores function and provides a durable solution, preventing subluxation recurrence.
