Sigmoid perforation in patients with chronic constipation.

Summary

Severe chronic constipation, without other bowel disease, can rarely lead to free perforation of the sigmoid colon. Surgical treatment resulted in no deaths and minimal complications in seven cases.

Background:

Free perforation of the sigmoid colon is a rare but serious condition.
Underlying causes typically include malignancy, diverticulosis, colitis, or trauma.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the potential link between chronic constipation and sigmoid colon perforation.
To report on the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients presenting with this condition.

Main Methods:

Retrospective case series analysis of seven patients treated between 1976 and 1982.
Review of patient histories, focusing on pre-existing bowel conditions and constipation duration.

Main Results:

All seven patients had a history of severe, untreated chronic constipation.
