This study found no deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism events in facelift patients who did not receive VTE chemoprophylaxis. The Caprini score may not accurately predict VTE risk in aesthetic surgery patients.
Area of Science:
- Plastic Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Thrombosis Research
Background:
- The Caprini scoring system is recommended for Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
- Most surgical societies in America have adopted the Caprini score for VTE prophylaxis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in facelift patients.
- To evaluate VTE incidence in patients not receiving VTE chemoprophylaxis based on the Caprini scoring system.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart review of 136 facelift patients (2016-2021).
- Exclusion of patients who received VTE prophylaxis.
- Descriptive statistics to analyze data.
Main Results:
- No cases of DVT or PE were identified in the study cohort.
- Average Caprini score was 5.625 (range 3-10).
- Postoperative hematoma occurred in 2.21% of patients.
Conclusions:
- The Caprini scoring system may not be optimal for predicting VTE risk in aesthetic surgery patients.
- No VTE events were observed in patients who did not receive chemoprophylaxis.
- Further research is needed to refine VTE risk assessment in plastic surgery.
