Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones01:20

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

5.2K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

Summary

Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is elevated in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients. High SII may indicate multifocal tumors, but it does not correlate with tumor size or invasion characteristics.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer.
  • The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) reflects the balance between inflammatory cells and lymphocytes.
  • Investigating the relationship between SII and DTC is crucial for understanding disease prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the association between differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTCs), histopathological features, and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII).
  • To compare SII values in DTC patients with those of healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Included 93 patients diagnosed with DTC and 33 healthy controls.
  • Measured neutrophil (N), platelet (P), and lymphocyte (L) counts to calculate SII (N x P / L).
  • Analyzed the correlation between SII and histopathological findings, including tumor multifocality, diameter, and invasion.

Main Results:

  • SII values were significantly higher in DTC patients compared to healthy controls (p = 0.000).
  • No significant association was found between SII and tumor pathology, perineural, lymphovascular, or capsule invasion, or extrathyroidal extension.
  • SII was significantly elevated in patients with multifocal DTC (p = 0.01) but not related to tumor diameter.

Conclusions:

  • The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is elevated in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients.
  • High SII may be linked to tumor multifocality in DTC.
  • SII does not appear to be influenced by histological type, invasion status, or tumor size in DTC.
