Low vitamin D levels are linked to severe COVID-19 outcomes in Japanese patients. This study identified low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] as an independent risk factor for invasive mechanical ventilation or death.

- This is the first study to assess vitamin D status and COVID-19 severity in Japanese patients.
- Low serum 25(OH)D levels are an independent risk factor for severe COVID-19 in this population.
