Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response01:27

Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response

2.6K
Cytotoxic T cells are a vital component of the immune system. They have the remarkable ability to identify and target antigens on infected or abnormal cells. These antigens often originate from intracellular pathogens such as viruses or abnormal proteins cancer cells produce.
Immunological surveillance is the ability of immune cells to monitor and eliminate infected cells with intracellular pathogens, neoplastically transformed cells, and cells with non-self antigens. Cytotoxic T cells and NK...

Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

677
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • It often presents as a nasal mass, but advanced stages have a poor prognosis.
  • Current treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, and L-asparaginase-based regimens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current standard of care for ENKTL.
  • To explore novel therapies evaluated for ENKTL treatment.
  • To discuss the biologic rationale behind these novel therapies.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of clinical trials and research studies.
  • Analysis of treatment outcomes for standard and novel therapies.
  • Exploration of the underlying biology of ENKTL.

Main Results:

  • Modern radiation and L-asparaginase have improved outcomes but relapses persist.
  • Novel therapies are being investigated due to high relapse rates.
  • Understanding ENKTL biology is crucial for developing targeted treatments.

Conclusions:

  • Despite treatment advances, ENKTL remains a challenging disease with frequent relapses.
  • Novel therapeutic strategies are essential to improve survival.
  • Further research into ENKTL biology will guide future treatment development.
