Summary

Patients with gout show higher hearing thresholds at extended high frequencies (EHFs) compared to healthy individuals. EHFs audiometry can aid in the early detection of hearing loss in gout patients.

Background:

  • Gout is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperuricemia.
  • Hearing loss is a potential extra-articular manifestation of gout.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze hearing levels in gout patients using extended high frequencies (EHFs) audiometry.
  • To assess the early detectability of hearing loss in gout patients.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative cross-sectional study.
  • Involved 32 patients with gout and 32 healthy volunteers.
  • Utilized pure tone (PT) and EHFs audiometry.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in PT audiometry hearing thresholds between groups.
  • Significantly higher hearing thresholds in gout patients at frequencies above 4000 Hz (4000-18000 Hz).
  • Hearing thresholds above 8000 Hz correlated with serum uric acid, hemoglobin, and high-density lipoprotein levels.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first study to demonstrate high-frequency hearing loss in gout patients using EHFs audiometry.
  • EHFs audiometry is crucial for early detection of hearing loss in gout patients.
