Background:

  • Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common complication after acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • The role of baseline hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the development of PSCI remains incompletely understood.
  • Identifying predictive factors for PSCI is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between baseline hemoglobin (Hb) content and the incidence of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI).
  • To determine if Hb levels predict cognitive function within three months following an acute ischemic stroke or TIA.

Main Methods:

  • A national multicenter prospective study included patients with acute ischemic stroke/TIA.
  • Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) within three months post-stroke.
  • Multiple regression analysis was employed to evaluate the relationship between baseline Hb and PSCI, adjusting for confounders.

  • Maintaining adequate hemoglobin levels may be a potential strategy to mitigate cognitive decline after stroke.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying this protective association.
