Background:

  • The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) is standard for acute stroke trials but has limitations in ordinal and dichotomous analysis.
  • The utility-weighted-mRS (UW-mRS) offers a patient-centered, linear alternative but lacks effective visualization methods.
  • Current stacked bar charts fail to represent UW-mRS utility-weighting information accurately.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate novel data visualization formats for utility-weighted-modified Rankin Scale (UW-mRS) results.
  • To compare the accuracy and usability of new UW-mRS displays against conventional stacked bar charts.

Main Methods:

  • Two new formats, Utility Staircase charts and choropleth-stacked-bar-charts (CSBCs), were created to visualize UW-mRS data.
  • These displays were applied to 15 randomized acute stroke therapy comparisons.
  • Accuracy was assessed using the Tufte-lie-factor, and usability was evaluated by a panel of clinicians.

Main Results:

  • Utility Staircase and CSBC displays effectively conveyed patient-centered utility valuations, unlike conventional charts.
  • Conventional stacked bar charts showed significant distortion (93%), while new displays had no distortion.
  • Clinicians found Utility Staircase displays (row height) easier to interpret than CSBCs (color intensity), both superior to conventional charts.

Conclusions:

  • Utility Staircase displays are efficient for visualizing UW-mRS results in acute stroke trials.
  • CSBCs offer a viable alternative for UW-mRS visualization.
  • Both new formats are more accurate and preferred by clinicians for depicting quantitative quality-of-life outcomes compared to traditional stacked bar charts.
