Background:

  • Handwashing is a vital, cost-effective method for preventing communicable diseases.
  • Despite its importance, handwashing compliance is often suboptimal due to various factors.
  • Understanding knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is key to improving public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess handwashing knowledge, attitudes, and practices among a surveyed population.
  • To determine the relationships between KAP regarding handwashing.
  • To investigate the influence of sex, educational background, and age on handwashing KAP.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire.
  • 636 respondents completed the survey, distributed via WhatsApp, Email, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Statements assessed respondents' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to handwashing.

Main Results:

  • 82.2% demonstrated good knowledge, 91% had positive attitudes, but only 48.4% exhibited good handwashing practices.
  • Lower educational attainment (high school) was associated with decreased likelihood of good knowledge, positive attitudes, and practices compared to tertiary education.
  • Positive attitude was a significant predictor of good handwashing practices (OR = 1.095, p = 0.000).

Conclusions:

  • Enhancing handwashing practices necessitates fostering positive attitudes and robust knowledge.
  • Higher education levels appear to positively influence handwashing knowledge and attitudes.
  • Improving access to facilities and implementing innovative compliance strategies are essential for better hand hygiene.
