Summary

This study explored homeopathic mother tinctures (MTs) for prediabetes. While not statistically significant, combining MTs with individualized homeopathic medicines (IHMs) showed a promising trend in improving blood sugar levels compared to IHMs alone.

Area of Science:

  • Homeopathy
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Metabolic Health

Background:

  • Prediabetes is a significant public health issue.
  • Homeopathic mother tinctures (MTs) are explored as adjuncts to individualized homeopathic medicines (IHMs) for prediabetes management.
  • Research on the effectiveness of MTs in prediabetes is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effectiveness of specific MTs (Cephalandra indica, Gymnema sylvestre, Syzygium jambolanum) as an adjunct to IHMs in managing prediabetes.
  • To compare the outcomes of IHMs plus MTs versus IHMs alone.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label, randomized, active-controlled, pragmatic, exploratory trial was conducted.
  • Eighty-nine patients with prediabetes were enrolled and divided into two groups: IHMs plus MTs (verum) and IHMs only (control).
  • Blood parameters (FBS, OGTT, HbA1c%) and symptom scores (DSC-R) were measured at baseline and after 3 and 6 months.

Main Results:

  • Although recruitment was impacted by the pandemic, data from 82 patients were analyzed.
  • Improvements in fasting blood sugar (FBS), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c%), and Diabetes Symptom Checklist-Revised (DSC-R) scores were observed in the group receiving MTs plus IHMs.
  • These improvements were greater than in the control group but did not reach statistical significance (p=0.046 for FBS).

Conclusions:

  • The combination of MTs and IHMs showed a promising, albeit nonsignificant, trend towards better outcomes in prediabetes patients, particularly for FBS.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to confirm these findings.
  • The study highlights the potential of homeopathic interventions in managing prediabetes.
