    Summary

    This study found no positive link between hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis activity and noradrenergic turnover in depression. Instead, severe HPA-axis non-suppression was associated with lower MHPG excretion in depressed patients.

    Background:

    • Previous research suggested a positive correlation between hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis activity and noradrenergic turnover in depression.
    • This relationship requires further investigation to understand the neurobiological underpinnings of depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between HPA-axis activity and noradrenergic turnover in a cohort of depressed patients.
    • To determine if HPA-axis activity correlates with MHPG excretion, a marker of noradrenergic activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured peak postdexamethasone cortisol levels at 8 a.m., 4 p.m., and 11 p.m. in 84 depressed patients.
    • Assessed 24-hour urinary 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol (MHPG) flow as a measure of noradrenergic turnover.
