    Area of Science:

    • Geriatrics
    • Internal Medicine
    • Medical Education

    Background:

    • Delirium is a frequent and serious condition in hospitalized elderly patients, often preventable.
    • Existing studies indicate a knowledge gap among healthcare professionals regarding delirium diagnosis and management.
    • In France, residents frequently serve as the primary point of contact for delirium patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the knowledge level of medical residents regarding delirium and its management in the elderly.
    • To evaluate resident awareness of national guidelines for delirium care.
    • To identify factors influencing residents' understanding of delirium management.

    Main Methods:

    • A national survey was conducted between June and December 2019.
    • A self-administered questionnaire, based on Haute Autorité de santé (HAS) recommendations, was distributed to residents.
    • 182 residents from 23 specialties across 18 cities participated.

    Main Results:

    • Residents were involved in over 97% of delirium cases, yet 45% were unaware of HAS recommendations.
    • The average survey score was 68/100, with therapeutic management identified as the most challenging aspect.
    • Residents with prior practical geriatric training demonstrated superior knowledge and performance.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a significant need for enhanced education on delirium and its management among medical residents.
    • Both theoretical and practical training, particularly hands-on experience in geriatrics, are crucial for improving knowledge.
    • Developing targeted educational programs and resources, such as pocket tools, could improve delirium care for the elderly.
