    Summary

As people with Down syndrome (DS) live longer, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) screening become crucial. Current neuropsychological tools for DS are often not validated in French or designed for AD diagnosis, highlighting a need for better assessment methods.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuropsychology
    • Gerontology
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Increased life expectancy in people with Down syndrome (DS) presents challenges like age-related cognitive decline.
    • Screening and diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in individuals with DS is a growing concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify and review existing neuropsychological tools for cognitive evaluation in adults with DS.
    • To assess the suitability of current tools for diagnosing AD in this population.
    • To highlight the need for French-validated, AD-specific assessment instruments for people with DS.

    Main Methods:

    • A literature review was conducted using PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, Wiley, and Google Scholar.
    • Articles published between July and November 2020 were included.
    • Studies focused on individuals with DS aged 18 and above, using cognitive assessment scales.

    Main Results:

    • 196 assessment tools were identified across 85 selected articles.
    • The majority of these tools lack validation in the French language.
    • Fewer than one-third of the tools were specifically designed for AD diagnosis in people with DS.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a significant need for the development of specific neuropsychological tools for AD diagnosis in people with DS.
    • These new tools must be validated in the French language to ensure clinical utility and accessibility.
