Prevention of Further Absorption of Poison01:14

Prevention of Further Absorption of Poison

935
In cases of acute poisoning, the primary objective is to prevent further absorption of the toxic substance into the body. Immediate interventions using various decontamination techniques targeting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can achieve this. Decontamination is crucial to prevent poison from entering the systemic circulation, which involves washing affected areas with water and mild soap and removing contaminated clothing. Once external decontamination is done, attention must be turned to...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Community Health Interventions
  • Substance Use Research

Background:

  • Gay men and transgender individuals report higher recreational drug use, particularly at social events.
  • Partygoers face risks of drug overdose without immediate emergency assistance.
  • This study evaluates a novel intervention training peer responders for overdose events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of the Party Keepers (PK) training program.
  • To evaluate the impact of the PK course on participants' substance use and risk behaviors.
  • To determine the extent to which PKs provide on-site assistance during overdose emergencies.

Main Methods:

  • A 4-hour training course (PK) was developed to address substance use-related medical issues.
  • Participants completed pre- and post-course questionnaires on demographics, risk behaviors, PrEP use, and drug use.
  • Post-course data also collected information on emergency situations encountered at party venues.

Main Results:

  • 62% of participants (N=52) completed follow-up questionnaires.
  • Participants reported reduced personal use of recreational drugs and sexual risk behaviors, and increased pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use.
  • 63% of PKs provided first-aid or assistance at public venues, increasing community responsibility.

Conclusions:

  • The PK peer-led harm reduction initiative effectively reduced drug use and sexual risk behaviors.
  • PK participants actively responded to drug-related emergencies at parties.
  • Findings support community-based interventions and resource allocation for harm reduction within sexual minority communities.
