Higher cumulative COVID-19 cases and deaths predicted increased manager anxiety and depression. Conversely, daily COVID-19 statistics and strict lockdowns were linked to lower mental health symptoms in managers. The cumulative death count was the strongest single predictor.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Limited research exists on using public COVID-19 data to understand country-level mental health impacts.
- Managers faced unique hardships during the pandemic, increasing their risk for mental health disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To predict anxiety and depression symptoms in managers globally using country-level Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) statistics.
- To identify specific COVID-19 metrics that correlate with mental health outcomes in a managerial population.
Main Methods:
- A two-wave online survey collected data from 406 managers across 26 countries in May and July 2020.
- Logistic panel regression and ordinary least squares regressions were employed to analyze the relationship between COVID-19 statistics and mental health indicators (GAD-7 and PHQ-9).
Main Results:
- Cumulative COVID-19 statistics (cases, deaths per million) positively predicted anxiety and depression symptoms.
- Daily COVID-19 statistics and stringent lockdown measures negatively predicted these symptoms.
- The cumulative death count emerged as the most significant single predictor for both anxiety and depression.
Conclusions:
- Cumulative COVID-19 burden is associated with increased mental health issues like anxiety and depression among managers.
- Daily pandemic metrics and lockdown stringency showed an inverse relationship with manager mental health.
- Publicly available COVID-19 data can serve as valuable indicators for assessing population mental health trends.
