  • Children showed uneven developmental profiles across the causal tasks, with 'solution' being the most challenging.
  • General intelligence had a large impact on explicitly identifying causal relations (66% direct effect), subsuming verbal measures.
  • Age accounted for 37% of the indirect effect, while fluid reasoning uniquely explained 28% of the variance in causal explanation.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive abilities are substantially related to causal reasoning in children.
  • The relationship is not solely explained by developmental changes in general intelligence ('g') within the studied age range.
  • Fluid reasoning plays a distinct and significant role in children's causal explanation abilities.
