lncRNA - Long Non-coding RNAs

9.0K
In humans, more than 80% of the genome gets transcribed. However, only around 2% of the genome codes for proteins. The remaining part produces non-coding RNAs which includes ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, telomerase RNAs, and regulatory RNAs, among other types. A large number of regulatory non-coding RNAs have been classified into two groups depending upon their length – small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNA, which are less than 200 nucleotides in length, and long non-coding RNA...

Summary

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) show altered expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), acting as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. Profiling lncRNAs may offer new biomarkers for PTC patient management.

Area of Science:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Genomics
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized for their roles in various cancers.
  • Their dysregulation is implicated in the pathogenesis of papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression patterns of lncRNAs in PTC.
  • To explore the potential of lncRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in PTC.

Main Methods:

  • Genome-wide analysis (GWAS) was employed to identify differentially expressed lncRNAs in PTC tissues.
  • Microarray techniques were utilized to examine lncRNA expression profiles.

Main Results:

  • Specific lncRNAs were found to be upregulated (e.g., HOTAIR, NEAT1) or downregulated (e.g., MEG3, CASC2) in PTC tissues compared to non-cancerous samples.
  • The expression levels of certain lncRNAs correlated with clinicopathological parameters like metastasis and tumor stage.
  • Some lncRNAs, such as BANCR, exhibited dual roles as oncogenes or tumor suppressors depending on interactions.

Conclusions:

  • lncRNA expression profiles in PTC tissues can serve as potential prognostic or predictive biomarkers.
  • Microarray-based lncRNA analysis offers a valuable method for PTC research and potential clinical applications.
