Background:

  • Eyelash enhancements are increasingly popular consumer and professional cosmetic products.
  • Eyelash extension glues, whether consumer or professional, may contain undeclared formaldehyde.
  • Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and allergen, yet its presence in eyelash glues is understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of formaldehyde in both consumer and professional eyelash extension glues.
  • To utilize the chromotropic acid method (CAM) for formaldehyde detection.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-seven eyelash glues were procured: 17 consumer and 20 professional products.
  • The chromotropic acid method (CAM) was employed to test all samples for formaldehyde content.

Main Results:

  • Formaldehyde was detected in 2 consumer glues that declared it and in 2 (13.3%) that did not.
  • A significant majority of professional eyelash glues, 15 out of 20 (75.0%), tested positive for formaldehyde.
  • The chromotropic acid method confirmed formaldehyde presence in both product types.

Conclusions:

  • Formaldehyde is present in a notable percentage of both consumer and professional eyelash glues.
  • Most professional eyelash glues and some consumer products are sources of formaldehyde release.
  • Patients and healthcare providers should be informed about the potential formaldehyde exposure from eyelash extension glues.
