Mitral annular calcification (MAC) patients without chronic diseases showed no difference in controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score. However, CONUT score correlated with left atrial diameter in MAC patients, indicating its value in assessing nutritional status.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Nutritional Science
- Medical Diagnostics
Background:
- Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is a common finding in cardiology.
- The relationship between MAC and nutritional status, assessed by the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, has not been previously explored.
- Evaluating nutritional status is crucial for managing cardiac patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between MAC and the CONUT score.
- To assess the nutritional status of patients with MAC.
- To determine if CONUT score can serve as an indicator of nutritional status in MAC patients.
Main Methods:
- A study cohort of 275 patients was analyzed, comprising 150 with MAC and 125 without MAC.
- Patients were recruited from a cardiology outpatient clinic.
- CONUT scores were compared between groups, and correlation analyses were performed with cardiac parameters.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in CONUT scores was observed between patients with and without MAC.
- In patients with MAC, the CONUT score showed a positive correlation with left atrial (LA) diameter and interventricular septum thickness.
- Left atrial diameter was independently associated with MAC in multivariate regression analysis.
Conclusions:
- The CONUT score did not differ significantly between MAC patients and controls, particularly those without chronic diseases.
- A correlation between CONUT score and LA diameter was found in MAC patients.
- CONUT score is a valuable index for assessing nutritional and inflammatory status in MAC patients with elevated LA diameter.
