Tadalafil administration reduced elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in rats exposed to hyperoxia. This treatment also lessened pathological effects like hyperemia and dilation in the corpus cavernosum.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Science
- Pharmacology
- Toxicology
Background:
- Hyperoxia can induce oxidative stress, impacting tissue health.
- Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a role in hyperoxia-induced damage.
- The corpus cavernosum is susceptible to oxidative stress-related pathologies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the protective effects of tadalafil against hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress in rats.
- To assess tadalafil's impact on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and nitric oxide (NO) levels.
- To investigate tadalafil's influence on pathological changes in the corpus cavernosum.
Main Methods:
- A hyperoxia model was established in rats over 10 days.
- Tadalafil (10 mg/kg) was administered orally to one experimental group.
- Levels of SOD and NO, and pathological changes in the corpus cavernosum were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Hyperoxia significantly increased SOD levels, which were reduced by tadalafil administration.
- No significant difference in nitric oxide (NO) levels was observed between groups.
- Tadalafil treatment decreased the severity of corpus cavernosum hyperemia and dilation.
Conclusions:
- Tadalafil demonstrates a protective effect against hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress in rats.
- The drug mitigates pathological changes in the corpus cavernosum associated with hyperoxia.
- Tadalafil's mechanism may involve the modulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.
