[Neutrophil function in children with acute lyphoblastic leukemia].

    Summary

Neutrophil function in acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients showed normal bactericidal activity despite reduced NBT dye reduction before treatment. Remission restored normal NBT dye reduction, indicating neutrophil recovery during leukemia treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Immunology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Neutrophil dysfunction can impact infection risk in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
    • Assessing neutrophil function is crucial for managing infections in leukemia patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate neutrophil function, specifically bactericidal activity and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) dye reduction, in ALL patients.
    • To investigate changes in neutrophil function before and during ALL treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • The study involved 12 ALL patients.
    • Neutrophil function was assessed using the NBT test and a bactericidal assay against E. coli.
    • Tests were conducted before and during therapy, including after cranial irradiation.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Untreated ALL patients exhibited normal neutrophil bactericidal activity.
    • A decreased number of neutrophils reduced NBT dye after activation with immune complexes in untreated patients.
    • Neutrophil NBT dye reduction normalized in patients who achieved remission.
    • No correlation was found between bactericidal activity post-cranial irradiation and NBT test results.

    Conclusions:

    • Neutrophil bactericidal capacity remains intact in untreated ALL, despite impaired NBT dye reduction.
    • Neutrophil function, indicated by NBT dye reduction, recovers during remission in ALL patients.
    • Cranial irradiation's effect on bactericidal power and NBT test requires further investigation.
