Area of Science:

  • Photonics
  • Terahertz (THz) technology
  • Optical communications

Background:

  • Coherent photonic THz systems are crucial for high-speed communications.
  • Current systems face challenges such as phase decorrelation, power loss, and complex matching circuits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a novel, simplified approach for coherent photonic THz systems.
  • To overcome limitations of existing multi-path implementations.
  • To enable complex modulation schemes with improved performance.

Main Methods:

  • A single optical path design is proposed, eliminating the need for multiple optical components.
  • The scheme is demonstrated to be compatible with direct modulation of optical frequency combs.
  • Avoidance of demultiplexing two tones from the comb is a key feature.
