    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Context:

    • Analysis of gastric cancer cases from 1970-1985.
    • Focus on early gastric cancer (EGC) detection rates.
    • Evaluation of surgical interventions for gastric malignancies.

    Purpose:

    • To report the incidence of early gastric cancer (EGC) in a historical cohort.
    • To discuss the clinical and pathological characteristics of EGC.
    • To outline surgical approaches for EGC based on tumor location.

    Summary:

    • Early gastric cancer (EGC) was detected in 23 patients (7.8%) out of 293 total gastric cancers.
    • Surgical treatment involved subtotal gastrectomy for 19 cases (middle/lower third lesions) and total gastrectomy for 4 cases (upper third/greater curvature tumors).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical and pathological aspects of these EGC cases are detailed.
  • Impact:

    • Provides historical data on EGC prevalence and management.
    • Highlights the importance of surgical site in determining gastrectomy type.
    • Contributes to understanding the evolution of gastric cancer treatment strategies.
