Summary

European nursing education lacks a consistent approach to complementary non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs). Most nursing programs do not integrate NPIs, despite their widespread use for pain, anxiety, and sleep issues.

Background:

Pharmacological interventions are standard for pain, anxiety, and sleep issues.
100 million Europeans use complementary non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs).
Nurses often lack formal education on NPIs, with limited public information on existing elective courses.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore and map nursing education regarding complementary NPIs for nurses in Europe.

Main Methods:

A web-based questionnaire was distributed to 49 experts in nurse education and NPIs across 16 European countries.
The survey included 35 items on course content, materials, teaching methods, and assessment.
A SWOT analysis was conducted, and qualitative data were analyzed using a directive content analysis approach.

Main Results:

Thirty-one questionnaires were returned from ten countries (63.3% response rate).
Massage, meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation are the most frequently taught NPIs.
Anxiety, stress, chronic pain, depression, and sleep problems are the primary conditions addressed by these NPIs.

Conclusions:

A unified European approach to nursing education on complementary NPIs and integrative nursing is absent.
NPI courses are not yet integrated into mainstream nursing curricula, despite being offered in some institutions.
