    Summary

    This study investigated chemoimmunotherapy for advanced melanoma. Adding bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy to dacarbazine and actinomycin D chemotherapy showed limited benefit, with similar complete response rates in both groups.

    Background:

    • Disseminated malignant melanoma is an advanced cancer stage with limited treatment options.
    • Chemotherapy regimens like dacarbazine (DTIC) and actinomycin D have been used, but response rates can be modest.
    • Immunotherapy aims to stimulate the immune system to fight cancer cells.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of chemoimmunotherapy combining DTIC, actinomycin D, and bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in patients with disseminated malignant melanoma.
    • To compare the response rates of chemoimmunotherapy versus chemotherapy alone.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-eight patients with disseminated malignant melanoma were enrolled.
    • Patients received DTIC and actinomycin D chemotherapy every 5 weeks.

    Conclusions:

    • The addition of bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy to dacarbazine and actinomycin D chemotherapy did not significantly improve complete response rates in patients with disseminated malignant melanoma.
    • Chemoimmunotherapy demonstrated a similar efficacy to chemotherapy alone in this patient cohort.
    • Further research may be needed to explore novel immunotherapy combinations or alternative treatment strategies for advanced melanoma.
