Summary

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential, video head impulse test, and caloric testing revealed vestibular involvement in sudden hearing loss patients. However, these vestibular tests did not correlate with hearing prognosis.

Background:

  • Sudden hearing loss (SHL) is an otologic emergency with variable outcomes.
  • Vestibular dysfunction is common in SHL, but its prognostic value is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess vestibular function in SHL patients using multiple tests.
  • To evaluate the correlation between dizziness, vestibular test results, and hearing prognosis in SHL.

Main Methods:

  • Observational, longitudinal, prospective study.
  • Included 17 SHL patients undergoing cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEM and oVEM), video head impulse test (vHIT), and caloric testing.
  • Audiometric assessment at baseline and follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Vestibular alterations detected in cVEM (29.41%), oVEM (64.71%), vHIT (41.18%), and caloric testing (38.46%).
  • Dizziness reported in 29.41% and tinnitus in 88.23% of patients.
  • No statistically significant correlation found between clinical data, vestibular test results, and hearing recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Vestibular assessment tools indicate vestibular involvement in some SHL patients.
  • Current vestibular tests do not appear to predict hearing prognosis in sudden hearing loss.
