Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Education
Background:
- Adolescent gender attitudes are crucial for social development.
- Measuring gender attitudes in diverse cultural contexts like India requires culturally relevant tools.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate novel measures of gender attitudes among Indian adolescents.
- To assess the reliability and validity of survey items, vignettes, and Implicit Association Tests (IATs) for measuring gender-based values and stereotypes.
Main Methods:
- A school-based sample of 14-17 year old adolescents in India participated.
- Developed and tested a survey measure with items and vignettes.
- Administered two Implicit Association Tests (IATs) to assess gender-based values and stereotypes.
Main Results:
- All developed measures demonstrated good internal reliability.
- Both gender-related IATs showed significant associations with the survey measure, suggesting criterion validity.
- Measures were positively associated with higher girls' mobility and educational attainment, indicating construct validity.
Conclusions:
- The developed gender-related IAT tools are consistent and valid for use with adolescents in India.
- These tools modestly correlate with behavioral outcomes like mobility and school enrollment.
- The findings contribute to a better understanding and measurement of gender attitudes in young populations.
