Bullying02:04

Bullying

8.5K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

85
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

91.4K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

125
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

105
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Secondary Motives: Affiliation Motivation and Aggression Motivation

421
Affiliation motivation is the intrinsic desire to connect with others and belong to a social group, which plays a crucial role in forming and maintaining personal relationships. This type of motivation is essential for psychological well-being, as it provides individuals with a sense of community and support. An example of this is a student who joins a study group in order to feel a sense of connection. People with high affiliation motivation actively seek social approval, take satisfaction in...

Summary

Sexual minority youth face more school violence and absence. However, the link between violence exposure and absence is similar across all sexual identities, suggesting universal safety programs are needed.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Sociology
  • Adolescent Health

Background:

  • Sexual minority youth experience disproportionately higher rates of school violence compared to heterosexual peers.
  • The relationship between school violence exposure and school absence based on sexual identity remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the association between school violence exposure and school absence differs across sexual identity groups among U.S. high school students.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 2015, 2017, and 2019 national Youth Risk Behavior Surveys.
  • Analyzed associations between three types of school violence (weapon threats, bullying, physical fights) and safety-related school absence.
  • Employed multivariable logistic regression, adjusting for demographic and behavioral factors, to calculate adjusted prevalence ratios.

Main Results:

  • Sexual minority students reported higher prevalence of school violence exposure and safety-related absence than heterosexual students.
  • The association between school violence exposure and school absence was consistent across gay/lesbian, bisexual, unsure, and heterosexual students.
  • For instance, weapon threats at school were linked to absence across all groups, with adjusted prevalence ratios ranging from 3.00 to 4.56.

Conclusions:

  • School absenteeism is associated with school violence across all sexual identity groups.
  • Implementing school-wide programs focused on safety and support can potentially decrease absenteeism for all students.
