    Background:

    • Deep wound infection is a serious complication following total knee arthroplasty.
    • Salvaging infected knees presents a significant clinical challenge.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a protocol for salvaging functional, painless knees with deep wound infection after total knee arthroplasty.
    • To analyze different surgical management methods for infected total knee arthroplasty.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of 21 cases of deep wound infection after total knee arthroplasty (1977-1984).
    • Assessment of infection chronicity and radiolucencies to guide treatment.
    • Surgical management included radical debridement, one-stage reimplantation, or two-stage reimplantation.

    • A functional, uninfected total knee arthroplasty was salvaged in 18 out of 21 patients (86% success rate).
