    Area of Science:

    • Healthcare Research
    • Patient Education
    • Collaborative Healthcare Models

    Context:

    • Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE) programs often involve health professionals (HPs).
    • There is a growing need to integrate patient-partners (PPs) into TPE delivery.
    • Limited structured training exists for PPs to co-facilitate TPE sessions.

    Purpose:

    • To co-construct a training model for patient-partners (PPs) to co-facilitate therapeutic patient education (TPE) sessions with health professionals (HPs).
    • To evaluate the implementation of this training model and co-facilitated TPE sessions.
    • To identify conditions facilitating the collaboration between PPs and HPs in TPE.

    Summary:

    • A 2-year collaborative research project developed and implemented a training model for PPs in TPE.
    • The study involved recruiting 24 PPs, training them, and evaluating 17 co-facilitated TPE sessions.
    • High satisfaction rates were observed among PPs, HPs, and patient beneficiaries.

    Impact:

    • Validated a training model for patient-partners in therapeutic education.
    • Demonstrated the feasibility and high acceptance of PP-HP co-facilitation in TPE.
    • Provides insights into favorable conditions for integrating PPs into TPE programs.
