Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques III

Regular exercise and meditation serve as essential tools in managing stress and promoting physical and mental well-being.
The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Mindfulness Interventions

Background:

  • Surgical training involves high-pressure decision-making, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting surgeon well-being and performance.
  • Excessive stress negatively affects surgeons' well-being, technical skills, and patient care.
  • Mindfulness training is linked to resilience, well-being, and improved executive function, yet its application in surgical training remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of a brief mindfulness meditation session on surgical trainees.
  • To assess the acceptability of mindfulness meditation as an intervention for surgical trainees.
  • To explore the potential of mindfulness to enhance stress resilience in surgeons.

Main Methods:

  • A feasibility study was conducted during a hand fracture fixation course.
  • Participants were randomized into an intervention group (10-min guided meditation) and a control group.
  • Demographics, trait mindfulness, mood changes, and intervention acceptability were compared.

Main Results:

  • The 17 participants were demographically similar across groups.
  • The meditation group reported significantly greater feelings of relaxation and calmness post-intervention (p < .01).
  • Mindfulness meditation was perceived as largely acceptable by the participants.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness meditation shows promise in improving mood and reducing stress among surgical trainees.
  • The intervention is acceptable and suggests potential for developing targeted programs to enhance surgeon well-being and performance.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the long-term benefits of mindfulness in surgical education and practice.
