1Department of Pediatrics.
Implementing structured educational elements and mentorship significantly improved the quality and satisfaction of morning reports (MR) for pediatric residents and faculty. This quality improvement initiative enhanced the educational value of this key graduate medical education conference.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Quality Improvement Science
- Graduate Medical Education
Background:
- Morning report (MR) is a cornerstone case-based conference in graduate medical education.
- Participant dissatisfaction with the educational value of MR is a growing concern.
- Data on effective strategies for improving MR quality and satisfaction are limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To enhance the quality and participant satisfaction of morning reports within an academic pediatric residency program.
- To implement and evaluate a standardized MR process incorporating core educational elements and structured mentorship.
Main Methods:
- Utilized improvement science methodologies to develop and implement a new standardized pediatric MR process.
- Integrated 5 core educational elements and structured resident-faculty mentorship into the MR format.
- Assessed educational elements via feedback forms and run charts; surveyed residents and faculty on MR quality and satisfaction pre- and post-intervention.
Main Results:
- The median score for core educational elements increased from 3 to 5.
- Resident reporting of high-quality MR improved from 50% to 72% (P = .20), and faculty reporting from 29% to 85% (P <.001).
- Satisfaction with MR content significantly increased for residents (50%-89%, P = .03) and faculty (25%-67%, P <.001), with notable improvements in mentorship and feedback satisfaction.
Conclusions:
- Improvement science provides a framework for developing effective graduate medical education processes.
- The integration of core educational elements and structured mentorship demonstrably enhanced pediatric morning report quality and participant satisfaction.
