Background:

Familiarity is a poorly defined concept crucial to rural nursing.
Existing understanding of familiarity in rural nursing is incomplete.
This review aims to identify and define key components of familiarity.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a scoping review of the existing literature on the concept of familiarity.
To analyze current knowledge regarding familiarity in rural contexts.
To inform a subsequent concept analysis using Walker and Avant's method.

Main Methods:

A scoping review guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines.
Searched 8 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsychInfo, etc.) for literature from 2016-2022 using 22 search terms.
Covidence software used for citation management; eligibility assessed via title/abstract screening and full-text review.

Main Results:

Data collection is scheduled from October 2021 to March 2022.
Findings will be disseminated through scholarly presentations and publications in 2022-2023.
The review is expected to yield a substantial body of literature on familiarity.

Conclusions:

This review will enhance the understanding of familiarity within rural life and nursing.
New insights will clarify familiarity's influence on rural healthcare practices.
The concept analysis will strengthen rural nursing theory and related concepts.
