Background:

  • Information technology use in offices is increasing, leading to musculoskeletal complaints in computer workers.
  • Ergonomic investigations require both self-reported symptoms and objective observational methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate ergonomic and biomechanical factors in computer workers.
  • To identify symptoms and correlate observational assessments with worker self-perception.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-one computer workers were screened for symptoms and demographics.
  • Two blinded observers evaluated participants using the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) and Maastricht Upper Extremity Questionnaire (MUEQ).

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in computer work duration between symptomatic and asymptomatic participants.
  • No correlation found between MUEQ and ROSA scores (p=0.054).
  • Asymptomatic participants reported higher job demands and MUEQ scores (p=0.004, p=0.044), despite reporting fewer pain-related complaints.

Conclusions:

  • Asymptomatic individuals may face higher job demands, potentially due to a lack of prior significant pain.
  • Asymptomatic workers reported other complaints like stiffness and edema.
  • Symptomatic individuals experienced difficulties with work time and effort.
