Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo was the most frequent cause of dizziness in the emergency department. Cerebellar stroke and vestibular neuritis were also common, highlighting the need for detailed neurological exams in dizziness diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Emergency Medicine
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Dizziness is a frequent chief complaint in emergency departments (EDs).
- This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of dizziness, including acute vestibular syndrome (AVS), in a Greek ED over six months.
- A total of 60 patients presenting with dizziness were analyzed retrospectively and prospectively.
Discussion:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was the most common diagnosis (20%).
- Cerebellar stroke (16.67%) and vestibular neuritis (16.67%) were significant findings.
- A substantial percentage (35%) of patients remained undiagnosed, indicating diagnostic challenges.
Key Insights:
- BPPV is the leading cause of dizziness in the ED setting.
- Cerebellar stroke and vestibular neuritis are critical differential diagnoses.
- The high rate of undiagnosed dizziness underscores the need for improved diagnostic protocols.
Outlook:
- Further research should focus on refining diagnostic criteria for dizziness in the ED.
- Implementing standardized neurological examination protocols can improve diagnostic accuracy.
- Long-term follow-up studies are needed to assess outcomes for undiagnosed dizziness patients.
