[Computerized tomography in the classification of hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers]

CT scans of 26 patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma were compared with macrosections and histological slices obtained from laryngectomy specimens in order to assess the role of CT scanning in the staging of hypopharyngolaryngeal carcinoma. Of the 26 cases six could not be staged correctly without CT. Computed tomography proved particularly useful in staging medium sized carcinomas (T2/3) of the supraglottic and piriform sinus region.
